No Doubt - Just a Girl
When I compare Japanese music, such as J-Pop and its variants, with Western music, especially the kind I like, listen to, and talk about here, I notice that popular Japanese music is usually very "happy." On the other hand, "my" music rarely is.
So, I tried to find some happy music I like and came up with "Just a Girl" by No Doubt.
If you're not familiar with them, No Doubt is an American band formed in the late eighties by a brother and sister and their friends. They became very popular in the 1990s and 2000s. Just a Girl was released in 1995 and it probably their first big hit.
They went on hiatus and split up a couple of times, but they reunited in 2024 and are more or less active today.
However, as the band became more famous, its singer, Gwen Stefani, became more prominent (despite the fact that, when success started to arrive, the band members' promise to each other that such a thing would never happen), she started an even more successful solo career. Her success largely contributed to the band's decline.
I don't listen to them much anymore, but every once in a while, I like to revisit their unique sound—a mix of ska, punk, rock, and pop.
By the way, I introduced the band and their music as "happy," but the truth is that while the tunes are happy, the lyrics are tongue-in-cheek with a quite serious undertone. They're about the kind of sexism that makes some men overly protective of the women in their lives.
Enjoy:
