Lana Del Rey - Gods & Monsters
In this Music for the Next Generation series, I usually introduce artists that I'm a big fan of and/or who have made a strong impact on me. Lana Del Rey is not one of them. I'd be lying if I said I was a fan.
Don't get me wrong; I don't dislike her. I like some of her songs very much, but I'm quite indifferent to others. That's why I don't call myself a fan. One of the songs I like is "Gods & Monsters," which was released in 2012 on the EP Paradise. Despite its dark themes — don't let the glamorous atmosphere surrounding it fool you; her music overall is not happy — it's probably my favorite song of hers.
As I type this, I realize that I mostly know her music from about ten years ago and haven't listened to her more recent music. Maybe I should give it a try.

Interestingly, the first time I heard the song was not the original, but an amazing cover by Jessica Lange in the TV show American Horror Story: Freak Show.
Here it is too:
I can't decide which one I prefer. Jessica Lange's performance is so captivating that I almost prefer her version to the original.
